Abstract

Background: Pilonidal sinus is an inflammatory disease that occurs acutely and chronically in the sacrococcygeal region. The pathogenesis of the disease is not precisely known and the treatment of choice is surgery; which can be done in different ways. In the present study, the results of two open and semi-closed surgical methods were investigated and compared.

Methods: A total of 150 patients with pilonidal sinus referred to Bandar Abbas Shahid Mohammadi Hospital who were candidates for surgery were randomly divided into two equal groups including group 1 with open surgery and group 2 with semi-closed surgery. P value < 0.05 was considered significant.

Results: In the current study 150 patients were analyzed which divided into two groups consisting of 75 patients in each one of them and one group (group 1) and another group (group 2) were treated with open  and semi-closure techniques, respectively. In group one were 52 male and 23 female patients, in group two 53 male and 22 female, group one and two average age were 26.17 ± 8.4 and 25.81 ± 8, respectively.

Conclusion: Overall results of the study demonstrate that there is no significant difference between the two procedures on recurrence and postoperative infection perspectives and also there was a significant privilege in semi-closure technique on hospitalization time, healing period, avoidance of work perspectives. And also this study demonstrated there is no significant relationship between demographic features and side effect incidents.
