Assessment of Knowledge Regarding Peri-Implant Diseases Management among Senior Dental Students and General Dental Practitioners in Yazd, Iran (2023-2024)

Introduction: The long-term success of dental implant therapy depends not only on achieving osseointegration but also on maintaining the health of the peri-implant soft tissues. The current study aimed to evaluate the knowledge level of senior dental students and general dental practitioners in Yazd, Iran, in 2023.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Yazd, Iran, during 2023, enrolling a total of 193 participants, comprising 88 senior dental students selected through a census method and 105 general dentists recruited through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a validated standard 16-item questionnaire assessing the knowledge related to peri-implant diseases, treatment modalities, management protocols, soft-tissue grafting procedures, and guided bone regeneration (GBR). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16 software at a significance level of P<0.05.
Results: The participants’ overall mean knowledge score was 10.41 ± 2.72, indicating a moderate level of knowledge. The mean knowledge scores were 10.18 ± 3.12 among senior dental students and 10.60 ± 2.33 among general dentists (P=0.669). Overall, 78% of the participants achieved at least 50% of the total knowledge score, including 72.7% of students and 83.8% of general dentists. More than half of the participants lacked adequate knowledge regarding peri-implant mucositis, the distinction between implant success and implant survival, and the treatment of peri-implantitis. In addition, more than 85% of participants in both groups were unfamiliar with the Cumulative Interceptive Supportive Therapy (CIST) protocol, while approximately half demonstrated insufficient knowledge regarding the application of laser therapy for peri-implantitis management. Knowledge scores were not significantly associated with age or sex (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Senior dental students and general dentists demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge regarding the management of peri-implant soft-tissue inflammation, although considerable deficiencies in fundamental concepts, standard treatment protocols, and contemporary therapeutic approaches. Revision of undergraduate curricula, strengthening practical training, and implementing continuing professional education programs are recommended to improve knowledge and enhance the quality of care for patients receiving dental implants.
