Ethical Challenges of School Health Care: Ethical Principles and Approaches

Abstract

School health care providers face numerous ethical challenges that often arise in the context of the diverse physical, psychological, and social needs of students, differences in perspectives among various stakeholders (including parents, teachers, and administrators), and limitations in human and financial resources. These challenges complicate professional decision-making and necessitate adherence to well-defined ethical principles. The present study aimed to elucidate the various dimensions of ethical challenges in school health care by examining effective ethical approaches and the application of fundamental principles of bioethics in this context. The four principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice have been selected as the theoretical framework for analysis. Alongside these principles, the concept of moral courage has also been emphasized as one of the important competencies of health care providers in making sensitive decisions. Focusing on situations such as conflicting interests between parents and students, facing health crises, resource shortages, and experiences of moral distress, this study demonstrated that ethical decision-making is a necessary condition for maintaining the quality of care and safeguarding the health and dignity of students. Finally, the study emphasized the need for continuing education, the development of clear ethical policies at the school level, and the promotion of collaboration among health care providers, administrators, parents, and relevant institutions to provide a safe, ethics-oriented, and empowering environment conducive to students’ growth and learning
